What is Person-Centred Therapy?

"The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction, not a destination."

CARL ROGERS

Client- or person-centred therapy focuses on maximising your ability to find solutions with the right amount of support from me. It is a non-directive approach requiring you to actively take the reins during each session, allowing you to guide the direction. Based on the theory of Carl Rogers, developed in the 1940s, person-centred therapy is rooted in the belief that the person has all the answers from within to thrive, so the therapist empowers you to find the answers. It's a therapy that comes under the humanistic umbrella, and humanistic psychology believes that we all contain untapped potential.

You decide what to talk about, not me as your counsellor, but your our relationship is an integral part of your therapy. Sessions focus as much on the present as the past - and on a free environment to be you. Person-centred therapy requires me to focus on your needs rather than give an in-depth analysis of your difficulties. I actively listen to you and understand how the world works from your point of view. The goals of this practice include:

  • Increasing your self-awareness.
  • Improving your ability to use self-direction to make desired changes.
  • Increasing the clarity of your values.
  • Improving your self-esteem and boosting your self-confidence.

Person-centred therapy has three core conditions: unconditional positive regard, empathy, and congruence.

Key Principles are:

  • Unconditional Positive Regard: As your counsellor I offer acceptance, non-judgment, and just respecting you just as you are, without judgement, while at the same time holding a vision of your full potential. This unconditional positive regard creates a safe and supportive environment for self-exploration and growth.

  • Empathy: I strive to understand your experience from your perspective and communicate this understanding back to you. I work to understand what you have been through and how you see the world. Empathy helps you feel heard, validated, and understood, fostering deeper self-awareness and personal growth.

  • Congruence: I am authentic, genuine, and transparent in my interactions with you. I don't pretend to be all-knowing or superior. This builds your trust in me and allows you to be more open and honest in your self-exploration.

The counselling sessions focus on you and prioritise your agenda, concerns, and goals. I encourage you to lead the therapeutic process by facilitating your own self-discovery and empowering you to make choices consistent with your values and aspirations.

Through this process you develop a stronger sense of who you are and thus you will make choices that are more aligned with your core values.

How Our Counselling Sessions Work

At Cammeray Counselling, I offer a free introductory 15 minute consultation call where you can ask me any questions you may have, and we can determine if I am the right 'fit' as your counsellor. If you decide to go ahead, we will have our initial session where we do an assessment of your situation and together determine the best way forward for you to achieve your counselling goals.

During the sessions, you are encouraged to lead the conversation while I am there to listen deeply and ask thoughtful questions . I refrain from judgement for any reason while providing a source of complete acceptance and unwavering support for whatever you are going through. I encourage my clients to regularly review their progress with me to make sure that they are on their way to achieving their therapeutic goals.

Research has proven that when clients experience unconditional positive regard from their counsellor, they are more likely to feel accepted and valued. When we feel accepted and valued, we have an easier time developing a greater sense of self-worth. Building a trusting relationship together is vital for the counselling process to succeed.

Meaningful change arises from self-awareness and self-acceptance. Together, in a therapeutic process empirically grounded in psychology and guided by honesty and compassion, we develop resilience and coping skills and explore ways that open the door to healing, growth and fulfilment.

COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY (CBT)

CBT is a talking therapy that can help you manage your problems by examining your thoughts and behaviour. It works on the concept that your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and actions are interconnected, and that negative thoughts and behaviours can trap you into a negative cycle. CBT aims to help you deal with overwhelming problems more easily by breaking them down into smaller parts. You're shown how to change these automatic negative thought patterns to improve your feelings and mood. CBT deals with your current problems rather than focusing on past issues and looks for practical ways to improve your state of mind daily.

SOLUTION-FOCUSED BRIEF THERAPY (SFBT)

SFBT is future-focused and goal-directed; focusing on solutions, resources and competency rather than the problems, deficits and limitations that brought you to therapy. SFBT is a short-term, goal-focused, evidence-based therapeutic approach incorporating positive psychology principles and practices. It helps you change by constructing solutions rather than focusing on problems. SFBT is a hope-friendly, positive emotion eliciting vehicle for formulating, motivating, achieving, and sustaining desired behavioural change. The principles of SFBT are to identify previous successes, amplify what's already working and build solutions based on successful, adaptive behaviours.

NARRATIVE THERAPY

Narrative therapy is based on the concept of 'storying' - telling the story of how your problem has affected your life. There is an emphasis on the stories you develop and carry throughout your life, with encouragement to create a new and preferred story. Narrative therapy empowers you to explore and reshape your life stories, particularly those overwhelmed by challenges and emotional distress.
